On October 16, 2012, members of NBBA addressed the Town Council, imploring the council to work with the community to help unify our efforts - find a business that will help build the Altadena community and will unify our community, to help work on other issues that hurt jobs and community safety in our neighborhoods.  We were well received, and are continuing to engage to pursue alternatives to Walmart, and unify as a community with many voices and a love of our town.

Thanks everyone who supported the research through LAANE that helped us uncover and study every document related to the Lincoln site.  We are disappointed to report that while there were a few anomalies, there was no clear pathway to slow or stop development of Walmart at the Lincoln site.  [See this article in the Altadena blog: www.altadenablog.com/2013/01/nbba-no-irregularities-on-walmart-filings-is-a-huge-disappointment.html]  We will continue our vigilance as Walmart continues to make plans to open a store there.  Current estimates say the Walmart Neighborhood Market may open as soon as late February.

Some of our activities within NBBA have helped us develop stronger relationships to the “Our Walmart” campaign, in which Walmart workers are organizing to secure a voice to fight for better working conditions.  Our continued involvement in supporting good jobs in Altadena could very well lead us to connecting the  “Our Walmart” campaign to our local store.

In the meantime, rumors are still broadly circulating that Walmart is interested in opening another store on Lake near Calaveras.  It is not the only potential new development on Lake - the Websters’ complex building is in escrow and there are numerous other sites where developers are looking to put in new businesses on the Lake corridor.

While NBBA supports responsible business development and good jobs in Altadena, current community standards and building codes are out of date.  The Town Council recently requested applications and appointed a committee to update community standards and codes, which have not been updated since 1986.  NBBA thinks this committee and the Town Council should be allowed to update the codes before large scale new development begins in the Lake corridor.  To support this effort, NBBA is asking the Town Council to petition the County Supervisors to establish a time- & geographically-limited moratorium on Lake Avenue development, until our community standards and codes can be updated.

1/2013 Lincoln Research Disappointment - and Focus on Limited Lake Avenue Development Moratorium

With so many of us now involved and thinking about ways to better develop Altadena, it seems only natural that people would want to be involved in town governance.  Seventeen people are running for seven slots on our Town Council this year. It could be a record! [Update - three people are no longer running - so it’s 14.)

The Town Council Election will be held on June 8th.  (If you are unable to vote on Saturday, you may vote early at the Community Center on Tuesday, June 4th, from 5PM - 9PM. )
